Incredible Injections, Botox and Dermal Fillers

Botox® and injectable fillers are able to treat a variety of age-related skin conditions to restore a smoother, more youthful facial appearance. Facial wrinkles and creases can be improved, including laugh lines, smile lines, frown lines and crow’s feet, as well as neck bands and sunken areas of the face. Some fillers can also be used to add fullness to the lips and even augment certain facial areas such as the chin. Fillers also make an excellent non-surgical alternative to lower eyelid surgery by temporarily filling in the hollowed region beneath the eyelid for a more youthful and rested appearance.

Botox® and injectable fillers are simple, non-surgical treatments.  No anesthesia is required, though the skin may first be numbed with a topical application or numbing agent. There is usually little or no downtime following treatment. Botox® and injectable fillers typically offer temporary improvement lasting anywhere from three months up to several years depending on the material used.

There are many different types of injectables available including Botox®, Restylane®, Perlane®, Juvederm®, Radiesse® and other related products.

Botox®
Botox® is a purified protein which temporarily halts the activity of muscles responsible for certain facial wrinkles. It is commonly used to treat frown lines located between the brows and crow’s feet next to the eyes. It is also effective in treating neck bands. Results generally last three to four months.

Restylane®
Restylane® is an injectable filler comprised of hyaluronic acid which restores lost volume. It provides a smoother appearance to the facial skin while also improving a variety of facial wrinkles and folds.  Results generally last up to six months.

Perlane®
Perlane® is another filler comprised of hyaluronic acid which restores lost volume. However, it is distinctive in that it is made up of larger gel particles. This allows Perlane® to be used for the treatment of deeper facial wrinkles and folds. Results may last six months or longer.

Juvederm Ultra XC/Plus®
Juvederm®, also made of hyaluronic acid, restores lost volume to treat facial wrinkles and folds, acne scars and other facial imperfections. Comprised of a smooth gel, it provides a smoother appearance to the skin, with results lasting six months or longer.

Radiesse®
Radiesse® is made of tiny, smooth calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres and can be used for facial contouring. It is unique in that it creates a form of lattice beneath the skin onto which your body’s own natural collagen grows. Radiesse® is commonly used to treat nasolabial folds and marionette lines and provides a smoother appearance to the skin. Radiesse® can also be used to augment areas of the face like the cheeks, chin and jaw line. We commonly uses Radiesse® as a non-surgical alternative to the midface lift to elevate the cheek tissues, restore volume to the cheeks, and soften smile lines. The duration of results vary though many patients enjoy improvement for up to one to two years.

BOTOX® Cosmetic Injections

BOTOXBOTOX® Cosmetic is a simple, nonsurgical, professionally-administered treatment that can temporarily smooth moderate to severe frown lines between the brows in people from 18 to 65 years of age. It can also be used to lessen the appearance of crow’s feet and other lines around the eyes. It is the only treatment of its type approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). BOTOX® injections can also be used to stop profuse sweating for underarms (Severe Axillary Hyperhidrosis).

What causes frown lines between the brows?

The lines that appear between your brows actually result from muscle movement and the passage of time. Two muscles are largely responsible for frown lines between the brows. When those muscles contract, they draw the brows together. As skin becomes less elastic over time, repeated frowning can result in those moderate to severe lines between the brows.

How is BOTOX® administered?

No anesthesia is required, although the area may be numbed with a cold pack or anesthetic cream. It will be determined where to administer the injections by examining your ability to move certain muscles in your brow area. The entire BOTOX® Cosmetic injection procedure takes approximately 10 minutes. Any discomfort will be minimal and brief. There’s no recovery time needed. You’re ready to get on with your day!

How soon will I see a difference? What kind of results can I expect?

You can expect to see results within days after your treatment. The appearance of the area between your brows may continue to improve for up to a week. By day 30 in a patient clinical study, 89% of patients judged the severity of their frown lines between their brows as moderate or better. The treatment generally lasts from 2 to 4 months. If you discontinue treatment, the frown lines between your brows gradually will look like they did before treatment.

Will my facial expressions continue to look natural?

Although the results are visible, a treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic will not radically change your facial appearance or make you look as if you “had work done.” The muscle activity that causes frown lines between the brows is simply reduced, so you can still frown or look surprised without the wrinkles and creases between your brows.

What are the common side effects?

The most common side effects following injection of BOTOX® Cosmetic include headache, respiratory infection, flu syndrom, temporary eyelid droop, and nausea.

How can I be sure I’m getting real BOTOX® Cosmetic?

Only licensed and trained healthcare professionals have the experience necessary to administer BOTOX® Cosmetic. Allergan, Inc., the maker of BOTOX® Cosmetic, is the only source for healthcare professionals to purchase the product, and each label has the “Allergan” hologram on it.

Just what is BOTOX® Cosmetic?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinumbacterium, which reduces the activity of the muscles that cause those frown lines between the brows to form over time.

How does BOTOX® control severe underarm sweating?

BOTOX® is FDA-approved for severe underarm sweating that is not adequately managed with topical agents. BOTOX® treatment helps control this condition by temporarily blocking the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. When the sweat glands don’t receive chemical signals, the severe sweating stops.

What should I know before my treatment?

You should stop taking a blood thinners, aspirin, ibuprofen, Vitamin e and fish oil supplements for 1 weeks prior to injection, to decrease your risk of bruising at injection site.  No alcohol 3 days prior to treatment.  Start taking Arnica (purchase at any pharmacy, it is a natural herb) for 3 days prior to treatment.

JUVEDERM® Injectible Gel

Juvederm Injectable GelJUVÉDERM® XC/Plus is a smooth gel filler that is used to instantly smooth away wrinkles around your mouth and nose. With just one treatment, you’ll get smooth and natural-looking results that last up to a year.

JUVÉDERM® is manufactured using HYLACROSS™ technology, creating a smooth-consistency gel. It is infused with lidocaine to improve comfort during treatment. With JUVÉDERM® you get the smooth results you expect, with the improved comfort you want.

Where does it work?

Everyone’s skin ages differently and JUVÉDERM® may be used to rejuvenate multiple problem areas. From smile lines to vertical lip lines, you can smooth away unwanted wrinkles and restore natural contours.

How does it work?

Young, healthy-looking skin contains an abundance of a naturally hydrating substance called hyaluronic acid (HA). But as you age, sunlight and other factors can reduce the amount of HA in your skin. The lack of HA causes your skin to lose structure and volume, creating unwanted facial wrinkles and folds – like those parentheses lines around your nose and mouth.

Using a dermal filler like JUVÉDERM® is a safe and effective way to replace the HA your skin has lost, bringing back its volume and smoothing away facial wrinkles and folds.

Why JUVEDERM®?

JUVÉDERM® is the ONLY hyaluronic acid (HA) filler FDA approved to last up toone year with one treatment.

Not all HA dermal fillers are created equal. Only JUVÉDERM® is so smooth. Other hyaluronic acid fillers currently on the market are made of granular consistency gels, but our unique manufacturing process (HYLACROSS™) creates a smooth-consistency gel that flows easily into the skin and provides a smooth, natural look and feel—so everyone will notice (but no one will know)!

JUVÉDERM® injectable gel is the first FDA-approved hyaluronic acid dermal filler that has proven its safety and effectiveness in persons of color. Studies with JUVÉDERM® showed no increased risk of hyperpigmentation or hypertrophic scarring in patients of color.

One size doesn’t fit all when it comes to wrinkle treatment. A customized treatment plan is important for achieving the best results. That’s why JUVÉDERM® XC is available in two formulations—JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC for versatility in contouring and volumizing facial wrinkles and folds, and JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus XC, a more robust formulation for volumizing and correcting deeper folds and facial wrinkles. This allows your healthcare professional to tailor treatment to meet your unique needs.

What are the common side effects?

You may experience pain, tenderness, temporary redness, swelling, bruising, firmness, and bumps at the injection sites. Studies have shown that these are usually mild to moderate in nature and clear up on their own in 7 days or less. If you experience swelling at the injection site, you can apply an ice pack for a brief period.

What should I expect after my treatment?

  • After the procedure there is minimal recovery or downtime.
  • You should see an immediate improvement in the treatment areas
  • Most patients need one treatment to achieve optimal wrinkle smoothing.
  • One treatment could smooth your lines and wrinkles for up to 1 year! However, results may vary and correction is temporary. Supplemental treatments may be required to achieve and maintain optimal results.
  • Risks include bruising at site of injections

Marionette Lines Before Treatment
RADIESSE Wrinkle FillerThe natural aging process causes your collagen to break down, taking away facial volume. RADIESSE® wrinkle filler not only instantly restores facial volume to smooth out the signs of aging, it keeps working with your body by stimulating your own natural collagen for long-lasting results in many patients. What is RADIESSE®?

RADIESSE® wrinkle filler is an injectable implant composed of a synthetically produced substance. The ideal way to achieve wrinkle reduction is by replenishing lost volume. With RADIESSE® wrinkle filler, you welcome back your own natural collagen to smooth out the signs of aging. That’s because RADIESSE® wrinkle filler’s unique formulation stimulates collagenesis – the production of new collagen – which results in increased volume for natural looking wrinkle correction that may last a year or more in many patients. It’s also why more and more cosmetic surgeons, estheticians, and other medical professionals are choosing RADIESSE® wrinkle filler for long-lasting facial rejuvenation.

How is RADIESSE® administered?

RADIESSE® is injected into the skin in a minimally invasive procedure. Injection of the product provides an immediate one-to-one correction of the face wrinkle. The amount of filling or augmentation can be easily placed and controlled for better results. There is no skin sensitivity testing or reconstitution required. Additionally, in a recent clinical study, RADIESSE®, when mixed with an anesthetic called lidocaine, significantly reduced pain during treatment. What that means for you is a safe, FDA-approved approach to significantly more comfortable treatment.

How soon will I see a difference? What kind of results can I expect?

A RADIESSE® treatment delivers immediate correction. Typically only one treatment will give optimal results for most patients, although a touch-up may be required. Over time, the gel is absorbed, and fibroblasts appear. The process of neocollagenesis begins, stimulating the gradual growth of your own collagen. The collagen that forms results in extended correction times and increased patient satisfaction. Results typically last up to a year or more for many patients. The results are long-lasting, but not permanent.

How does it work?

The illustrations below depict the increase in collagen growth post-RADIESSE® treatment. The photo on the left is immediately after the RADIESSE® injection. The photo on the right shows increased collagen production 6 months later. Collagen is represented as the dark orange strands.

What results should I expect?

You can expect soft, natural-looking results that feel like your own tissue. The primary component in a RADIESSE® treatment is identical in composition to the mineral portion of bones and teeth. It contains no human- or animal-derived components, and there is virtually no risk of allergic reaction. A RADIESSE® treatment also does not require sensitivity testing prior to treatment.

What are the common side effects?

The most common side effects following the injection of RADIESSE® wrinkle filler include slight bruising, redness and swelling. These side effects are generally mild and only last for a short time.

What areas can be treated with RADIESSE®?

Treatment areas for RADIESSE® include

  • smile lines (the lines and creases that run from the side of the nose to the corner of the mouth),
  • marionette lines (the lines and creases that run downward from the corners of the mouth that can make you look like you’re frowning, even when you’re not),
  • oral commissure (the corners of the mouth that take on a downturned appearance), and
  • pre-jowl (the area on either side of the chin).

Could I have an allergic reaction to Radiesse?
Radiesse is biocompatible. You do not need to undergo skin allergy testing, which is common with certain animal-based or permanent filler agents, prior to treatment. However, if you believe you are having an allergic reaction to Radiesse, seek medical attention immediately.

Is Radiesse permanent?

No. Treatment results are long-lasting, but not permanent. Over time the tiny calcium-based microspheres gradually break down into calcium and phosphate ions which are safely and naturally absorbed into your body, leaving your own newly produced collagen in their place.

ive. In the FDA clinical studies there were virtually no allergic reactions. There may be some normal injection related occurrences, such as bruising, discomfort, swelling, or redness that typically resolve on their own.

What should I know before my treatment?

 Dysport:

Dysport recently got approved by FDA for treating facial wrinkles.  Dysport was originally to be marketed in the US under the name “Reloxin”, but the FDA decided that the original name should be used and did not allow the new name.  Dysport is very similar to Botox.  Dysport and Botox are made by different companies, but they have the same basic structure and they work in the same way.

Dysport temporarily relaxes the muscles you use to frown. Dysport smoothes facial lines and wrinkles and is believed to last approximately 4 months.

What is the difference between Dysport and Botox?

Based on current studies, Dysport effects may be seen sooner than Botox.  However, the difference is so little that it does not matter much to users.  Some studies suggests that dysport effects larger area arround its injection site.  This study has its own limitation and yet to be proven to make any difference clinically.

Dysport is slightly less expensive than botox.  But so far, Dysport seem to be almost identical to botox.  Dysport is now the newest competitor to Botox in the U.S., but has been used in Europe in for many years.  As always competition has shown to be a good and healthy thing.  This may spur on pricing competition that will benefit consumers.  Also the competition may trigger more attempts to come up with the next “bigger and better” products.
