What is Xeomin®?

Xeomin® is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles, and works very much like Botox®, by temporarily reducing or eliminating muscle contractions in the area.

The difference between Botox vs. Xeomin lies in the type of botulinumtoxin A used. Whereas Botox® uses onabotulinumtoxin A, Xeomin utilizes a slightly different version called incobotulinumtoxin A.

Both treatments are FDA approved for treatment of frown lines and work by relaxing the treated muscles.

What Xeomin® Treats

Xeomin’s ability to limit muscle contractions has opened many avenues for the use of this treatment. For example, this injectable has been used to:

  • Treat abnormal spasm of the eyelids in adults who have had prior treatment with onabotulinumtoxin A (Botox®), by relaxing the facial muscles that control the eyelids.
  • Temporarily improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines) in adults. Much like Botox®, Xeomin® can temporarily limit movement in certain muscles, thus reducing the appearance of frown lines and other heavy wrinkles.
  • Treat cervical dystonia (CD) in adults. With cervical dystonia, neck muscles contract involuntarily, often affecting head position and causing great pain to the sufferer. Injection treatment can relax these muscles, giving the patient temporary relief

How Long Does Xeomin® Last?

The results of a typical injection tend to last about 3 months, which of course heavily depends on the patient’s individual chemistry and metabolism rates. However, keep in mind that Xeomin® treatments are likely a better solution for ongoing facial skin treatment, as results from this treatment will show their strongest appearance after about 30 days.

This is different from dermal fillers like Belotero Balance® or Perlane®, which tend to show more immediate results by increasing volume under the skin.

What to Expect During Treatment

During treatment, your California Skin Institute provider will use a small needle to inject Xeomin® into the treatment area. Typically, several small injections are made, to distribute the treatment more evenly and to achieve results that look natural.

Does Xeomin® Hurt?

California Skin Institute providers use a numbing cream and small needles to ensure that injections are comfortable and virtually painless for our patients.
