Latisse: Can It Be Used on Lower Lashes and Eyebrows?

A. Foley on 23 Oct 2012 at 9:00am

Consumers and doctors are often interested in exploring off-label use of approved treatments – just look at all the uses discovered for Botox! – but sometimes it is best to stick with the specified treatment area. In the case of Latisse, many RealSelf community members asked the logical question, why can’t it be applied to lower lashes, or help eyebrows grow? The short answer is: it (technically) can, but it isn’t without risk. We’ll let the doctors tell you in their own words why Latisse is only FDA-approved for upper lashes, and suggest an option that may be a better bet for eyebrow darkening.

  • “I would caution people a bit about using Latisse in off label applications. Specifically, the lower lashes get some of the medication when you close your eyes (the reason Allergan recommends using it at night). Placing medication on both lashes is likely to increase the dosage of the medication you’re getting…[which] increases potential side effects (most commonly eye irritiation which can be serious).” – Steven H. Williams, MD
  • “As many of the physicians have stated Latisse is only FDA approved for use on eyelash hypotrichosis, which is another name for having inadequate lashes. With this said I have many patients in my practice who have found it to work quite well on their eyebrows.” –Michael Elam, MD
  • “This is possible but it has not been evaluated. It is interesting that the company warns that if you “spill” this onto your cheek, it may result in increased growth there so it make sense that it could make your eyebrows grow. Of course the wheels are turning and your thoughts may wander to its’ benefits in male pattern baldness but this has not been evaluated to the best of my knowledge.” –Otto Joseph Placik, MD
  • “If you would like to darken your eyebrow, Rogaine would be a much better choice. You might take a Q tip and coat your eyebrow with this product. Be careful to only use this on your eyebrow since it might cause your normal skin to become hairy.” – Arnold R. Oppenheim, MD

Permanent Side Effects, this is why we focus on SAFETY.  These are not our patients, just pics I found online, thank god.

Skin discoloration – This is usually permanent lightening of the skin on the treated area. Because the laser is made to attack the pigmentation in darker colored hair it can sometimes affect darker colored skin as well. Although not a physically painful side effect, it could be sever and emotionally damaging.

LASER is an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation.

The Truth About Chemical Peels

Purpura (from Latin: purpura, meaning “purple”) is the appearance of red or purple discolorations on the skin that do not blanch on applying pressure. They are caused by bleeding underneath the skin. Purpura measure 0.3–1 cm (3–10 mm), whereas petechiae measure less than 3 mm, andecchymoses greater than 1 cm.[1]

Hirsutism (HER-soot-iz-um) is a condition of unwanted, male-pattern hair growth in women. Hirsutism results in excessive amounts of coarse and pigmented hair on body areas where men typically grow hair — face, chest and back.

The amount of body hair you have is largely determined by your genetic makeup. Hirsutism may arise from excess male hormones called androgens, primarily testosterone. Or hirsutism may be due to an ethnic or family trait.

No Touch ups
Please note we do not offer free touch ups for  Laser Hair Removal anymore unless we actually missed an area, we can’t guarantee that we will hit all hairs and we can’t guarantee all hair hairs will shed.  Some treated hairs may not shed.  Customers like John Morgan, Rani Issa have used this as a tool to take advantage of us – them 2 must get everything treated in one session or pay full retail – no touch ups for them or anyone else – no exceptions.

Treat within your limits, don’t let customer scam you and don’t play follow the leader with the previous laser tech
When doing treatments stay within your range of the treatment, make good notes if oddly shaped or if you promised to treat a hair or 2 free.  I will start monetarily be deducting fees from staff that I find out they are doing this.  If you throw it in to get the deal – no problem, just note it.  If there are no notes and you are treating the patient and the patient tells you that the previous tech. did include even one shot – do not do it for free, offer to do it for a fee and tell the customer that the tech that did the free shot will get in big trouble – this is like stealing from the company.

If you don’t agree with previous laser tech settings, don’t just play follow the leader.  Dig a bit ask customer questions like did they have any tan when they had last treatment or any facial treatments such as peels.  Treat within limits and always be more conservative than aggressive.

Skin type 4-6 always do test spots and bring customer back in a week for treatment.  Inform these customers it will take more treatments to achieve desired results.

Consultations
Every consultation must get a test spot unless the customer doesn’t want one (they should they are here for possible treatment) –  go extremely mild on test spots.  This is a closing tool, you are going the extra mile here, not all facilities offer free test spots.  We need to do thing that separate us from competition.

Always use the assumptive approach with customers and closing customers. “When you start your treatments with us” “each time you come back to us for your next treatment” “do you have any questions, great lets get you started would you like to start with our paying as you go plan or with our package that gives you 9 treatments at half off”

If you don’t ask for the sale you won’t get the sale.  Good sales people ask for sales and are not affraid to ask for the sale.  Never be afraid to ask for a sale, there is a reason that the customer is in your office sitting across from you, they are waiting for you to ask for the sale.

Enjoy you job, have fun and make it fun for yourself and other staff members.  Without smiles and fun we are just ordinary.

Staff product cost
Employees can purchase product for cost plus $6.  Note there is a new price sheet and there is a increase rate in product.

First of each month
Remember the 1st of each month is cleaning days for all lasers and air coolers.

Never too Clean
We can never be too clean or organised.  Customers are looking for this when they come into the office, especially on the first visit.  Keep office clean and organized and eliminate CLUTTER.  Remember to spray Lysol at the end of every night, never spray at the lasers.  Clean bathrooms in Allentown and Colmar once per week minimum.

Vacuum cleaners maintenance :  Please empty vacuum cleaners, if you don’t empty them they will not work.

Booking appointments:  “Just book it”, but don’t book on off days unless you have a commitment from Jeff or Diane for approval.

November contest for all staff members:  Whoever sells the most products gets $100 – this includes teeth whitening.  Front desk staff, get to learn your products, I will be requiring all front desk staff to know all products to sell to our customers.  Anyone with skin color issues of browns should be using our Rebrightalize product.  Green Tea products are awesome for sensitive skin but also for all skin types.  Our Acne pads, face cleaner and acne cream are affordable and awesome products.  Remember we are selling “Physician Strength Products” not over the counter products.  You can’t buy these quality products in Sephora or Macy’s.  All Physician Strength Products all FDA regulated all over the counter are not regulated.  A over the counter Retinal product can say 10% and really only have 1% in it.  I believe ROC has less than 1% retinol in that product.  If you have a customer  concerned with aging they are crazy if they are not using a Physician Strength Retinal – regenerating and turning over new skin is key to anti aging.  All offices will be focusing on skin care sales.  Get your Topix manuals out and start studying.  I’m going to be carrying my like the bible and reading it till I memorize it.

New words for us to always use when referring to our lasers:  “premium lasers” (Alex and selected Diodes) and “non premium lasers” (pain free Diodes, Yags and IPL’s)

Unplugging Lasers
At the end of each night we will be totally unplugging lasers and heaters.  This job is for the laser techs, not front desk staff.

Front Desk Staff
I really want to see more enthusiasm greeting customers in person and on phone – just smile and be yourself.

Laser Techs
I just would like to see more uniformity in our process of treating customers.  I just hate when I do treatments and customer tell me that techs are doing different areas at no cost.  If we all stay within our boundries or our notes boundries we won’t have future issues.  As we grow and add more days and more laser techs we need to be more systematic and uniform.
